Poland Map Auschwitz. The city is known internationally for being the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp (the camp is also known as KL or KZ Auschwitz Birkenau) during World War II, when Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany. Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans.
The Nazi German concentration camp and center for the extermination of Jews created during World War II on the outskirts of Oświęcim.
Located near the industrial town of Oświęcim in southern Poland (in a portion of the country that was annexed by Germany at the beginning of World War II ), Auschwitz was actually three camps in one: a prison camp, an extermination camp, and a slave-labour camp.
The images present the site of the former camp, historical descriptions, witness accounts, archival documents and photographs, artworks and objects related to the history of the camp. It was a complex of camps, including a concentration, extermination, and forced-labor camp. Throughout the world, Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust.
